Evidence Based

My Mighty Hands©

A short term multi-sensory handwriting program

Evidence Based Practice

Handwriting is an important educational occupation for children. The incidence of handwriting deficits are increasing, demanding available effective intervention strategies. Even though no clear empirical evidence exist for the specific combinations of sensory strategies, evidence suggest that both individual sensory strategies as well as multi-sensory approaches are effective in handwriting remediation (Pfeifer et al., 2008)(Schilling et al., 2003)(Cook, Mitchell & Goldin-Meadow, 2008)(Desai & Rege, 2005)(Bundy, Lande & Murray, 2002)(Tsengh & Chow, 2000)(Volman, van Schendel & Jongmans, 2006).

My Mighty Hands©  is a multimodal  program, which uses a multi-sensory approach to handwriting remediation. It consists of 72 lesson plans divided between 4 skill levels: Level A (Prewriting), Level B (Print,) Level C (Advance Print) and Level D (cursive). Each lesson plan provides worksheets, homework sheets,  parent handouts and instructions for a variety of gross and fine motor activities with sensori-, neuromuscular-, motor- and visual perceptual components.

My Mighty Hands© has been implemented for many summers at a private pediatric clinic, receiving not just positive feedback on its effectiveness from parents and therapists, but also enquiries about the evidence to support the rationale behind the combination of different activities used in the program. Thus a need was identified to objectively determine the effectiveness of this program and to make improvements based on evidence and the experience of all parties involved.
